Public Holiday Falls on a Weekend

A public holiday can sometimes fall on a weekend, and the legislation around this can be confusing depending on which day it falls on. If it falls on a Sunday, it can also depend on which public holiday it is.

How it works

Regardless of which public holiday it is, if it falls on a Saturday, the day can only ever stay the same or be Mondayised. To work out which option applies, if the employee normally works on a Saturday, it stays on the Saturday. If the employee does not normally work on a Saturday, then Monday is treated as if it were the actual public holiday.

If the public holiday falls on a Sunday, then it is a little different. If it is ANZAC Day or Waitangi Day, it can either stay the same or become Mondayised. To work out which option applies, if the employee normally works on a Sunday, it stays on the Sunday. If the employee does not normally work on the Sunday, then Monday is treated as if it were the actual public holiday.

If the public holiday falls on a Sunday and it is Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day, or the day after New Year's Day, then it can either stay the same or become Tuesdayised. To work out which option applies, if the employee normally works on a Sunday, it stays on the Sunday. If the employee does not normally work on the Sunday, then Tuesday is treated as if it were the actual public holiday.
